Overview of Glass Recycling in Fairfax County (Including the Purple Can Club)
Fairfax County no longer accepts glass bottles and jars in the curbside recycling program. Residents should reuse glass containers or bring them to purple, glass-only recycling containers located throughout the region. If this is not possible, glass should be placed in the trash.

Trash removal will occur twice a week. The scheduled pick-up days are Tuesdays and Fridays. Yard Debris removal for single-family and estate homes (only) will be done on Wednesdays during the months of March through December. Yard Debris removal for townhomes will be done on Fridays during the months of March through December. During the off season from the last week of December through February, yard debris removal will return to Fridays for all Homes.
Trash must be properly secured in tied, plastic bags, standard trash cans or American Disposal Services 96-gallon, wheeled carts placed at the curb before 6:00 a.m. Trash bags or containers shall not exceed 50 lbs. per bag or container. Every effort will be made to pick up all trash before 6:00 p.m. or shortly thereafter.
Recyclables will be picked up once a week on Fridays and must be separated from normal household trash and placed in the recycle container or paper bag. American Disposal Services will provide one recycling bin per unit. All recyclables must be at the curb by 6:00 a.m.
Recycling consists of the following materials:
- Mixed Paper
- Metal Food Containers
- Beverage Containers (NOT glass)
- #1 & #7 Plastic Bottles & Jugs

Newspapers and magazines must be bundled in paper grocery bags or tied with heavy twine.
Aluminum, plastic, and ferrous metal food cans should be rinsed out and placed in American Disposal Services recycling bins.
ADS has provided a sixteen (16) gallon open-top bin per townhouse unit, for the disposal of recyclables. Upon request and at no additional cost ADS will deliver one sixty-five (65) gallon “wheeled and lidded Recycling container” to each unit, as a substitute for the open-top bin.
Yard debris must be separated from household trash and will be picked up on Fridays for townhomes. Yard debris will be picked up on Wednesdays for estates and single family homes. Yard debris “season” is March 1-December 24.
Residents must use compostable paper bags for grass clippings and leaves. Personal cans may be used; however, they need to be marked “yard debris”. Containers should be secure so they will not blow away. Tree limbs and brush must be no longer than 4 feet in length and 3 inches thick in diameter. These items must be tied with rope or twine in arm length bundles. American Disposal will collect a maximum of 10 bags of grass clippings and/or leaves, and 10 bundles of brush per pick up. There will be an extra charge if you would like to schedule additional removal of these items. Please call American Disposal in advance for pricing and to schedule. Items that are bagged and bundled are not to exceed 50 lbs. Concrete, rocks, mulch, sod, and dirt are not accepted. The weight limit for yard debris is 35 lbs. or less per bag or container. Only during the months of January and February may yard debris be mixed with trash.
Effective January 1, 2021, ADS will no longer collect yard debris in plastic bags.
Christmas trees will be collected separately within the first two weeks of January. Trees must be placed at the curb prior to 6:00 a.m. All tinsel and ornaments must be removed from the tree. Please do not place in bags.
Special pickups (not to exceed two cubic yards in volume) will be collected at curbside on the 2nd trash collection day (Fridays) by appointment only (prior notice is requested when any large items are to be disposed) at no additional charge. Special pick-ups consist of furniture and other large, non-metal household items. Ferrous metal/white good items, such as appliances, will be picked up with additional billing to the individual homeowner.
Trash removal service will be provided by the Association. The Association has contracted American Disposal Services (ADS), to provide twice weekly, curbside trash removal service. Each Townhome was issued a recycling bin and each Single Family/Detached home was issued a trash can and recycling bin at the beginning of the contract. These trash cans are the property of American Disposal and shall convey with the unit at the time of sale. If your unit does not have a can (it should have conveyed at the time of sale), replacement cans may be obtained from the contractor for an additional fee. Damaged cans will be replaced at no charge. Please contact American Disposal Service at 703-368-0500 between the hours of 7:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. to schedule a replacement as soon as possible. In the case of townhomes, trash should be placed at curb-side in front of the unit in trash containers with lids or securely fastened, or in heavy-duty trash bags. In order to maintain the appearance of the community, homeowners can only place their trash by curbside after 6:00 p.m. the day before scheduled pick-up days, or before 6:00 a.m. on the mornings of scheduled pick-up days.
*If your ADS container is worn or damaged ADS will replace the container at no additional cost to the Association or resident. Any containers lost or damaged due to neglect may incur a fee to replace.*
Additional facts and suggestions regarding the trash removal service are provided below:
- Newspapers can be placed in paper bags or tied with twine and placed at curbside. Glossy print, such as magazines and Sunday advertisements, should not be recycled.
- Trash should be placed at curbside after 6:00 p.m. the day before scheduled pick-up days, or before 6:00 a.m. the day of scheduled pick-up days. The pick-up days are Tuesday and Friday.
- The contractor will pick up packing boxes and other debris related to move-ins.
- Please call the contractor to make arrangements for pick-up of large items, such as furniture and other large non-metal household items. There will be an extra charge for the pick-up and disposal of appliances. Homeowners wishing to dispose of such items should notify the contractor in advance for pick up on Friday (Telephone number 703-368-0500).
- The contractor will pick up hedge and tree trimmings provided that they are cut to four-foot lengths with limbs no larger than six inches in diameter and tied in bundles or placed in boxes.
